Deep State: Live Review

Deep State is an Athens, Georgia based punk group featuring four guys who have probably played in a dozen bands between them.  I caught them on a beautiful night where they were supporting Atlanta’s Small Reactions at the Earl in the East Atlanta Village.

Their set played out much like their album, with audibly aesthetic feedback leading from one infectious driving song to the next.  A driving backbeat with basslines galloping to stay in pace with the drums accompanied jagged but pop-sensible guitar leads.

They made me feel like I could be at the beach singing “oooOOOooo” even though we were in the dark room of the Earl. At one point all stage lighting went out, but Deep State never missed a beat demonstrating exactly how tight they were.

The vocals were muffled and covered in frenetic screams while vibrating whammy leads bled from a super rad red Jaguar guitar.  Can’t wait to see these guys again.

A setlist from this show can be found here.
