970: Booker T & The M. G.s – Green Onions (1962)

Everybody knows the main jam from this record but who knew it was just a literal jam the band, a house band for Stax records, had come up with on the fly while waiting for an artist to show up and record with them. Everyone at the studio loved the jam and after three takes the had it.

They weren’t even a proper band! But then they had to put together an album of material and here we are. The album is very similar to the hit Green Onions, a super smooth organ sound, swinging drums and bass and no vocals. Even on the covers they do, no vocals.

Bottom line: The album itself is pretty forgettable, if danceable, but the title track is so unforgettable smooth it’s excusable.
